Prompt: If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

Prompt Response: If I were to compose a poem about one aspect of my life, it would be about my inability to communicate effectively. When I was a child, I was quite extroverted, but due to a variety of factors I closed off a lot in middle school. My poem would probably emphasize the unneeded stresses modern life brings us and how foolish it is to be confined by what really isn't there. It would also emphasize the separation of nature from human life, and how we are constantly destroying everything around us. My life's overall message would be to connect with not only others, but with the world itself, and to truly live.

Summary: Today we read several poems by Emily Dickinson and discovered the elaborate themes and symbolism that was woven in to such few words.

Reflection: I quite enjoyed the poems, however, the themes of death and the after life made me a bit uncomfortable. In my opinion, I think we're better off facing death when it comes to us at the time, and accept that we don't know what's going to happen and that's OK.

Use a hyperbole, an understatement, and a litotes to describe today's lesson.

As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?
