Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

Prompt: Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

Prompt Response: One truth I was afraid to accept came to me once I reflected upon my skill level in the playing of the violin and piano. At the time, I was very concerned with my abilities, as at that point I had been playing for quite some time (multiple years) and was still not happy with where I was at. I saw other people who were much better than me and who also played for much less time and were also much younger in general. These feelings were especially prevalent at a concert I participated in, where I messed up very badly and to be honest embarrassed myself heavily. After this I realized I am not the fastest learner when it comes to music, and that even if you dedicate yourself there's no guarantee you'll get anything in return, which hurt a lot.

Summary: Today we took notes on the aspects of argument, as well as the three rhetorical appeals.

Reflection: I found the notes to be pretty interesting today, especially the parts about the three appeals. I wonder if there are other systems of rhetoric that have more than three appeals.

As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?
