Prompt: McCandless set out to live independently in the wilderness, but his death reveals the harsh reality of nature and survival. In your blog post, analyze how his desire for independence contributed to his death. Then, connect this idea to your own life by explaining a time when you wanted complete independence or control over a situation. Did things go as planned, or did you face unexpected challenges?

Prompt Response: Chris's desire for independence is what led him to such a lonely and dangerous place in the first place, as that is what he thought would make him happy. One time when I wanted complete control over a situation was when I did a group project in third grade. I got so upset that things didn't go my way that progress was slowed dramatically. I regret making a big deal out of that, as I didn't realize that everyone is trying to make the project the best they can be, even if it's not done the same way it is in my head.

Summary: Today in class we watched the rest of the "Into the Wild" movie and finished the book.

Reflection: I thought the movie was a fairly good adaptation of the text. I did not, however, like the ending as I found it quite excessive and disturbing.

Use a hyperbole, an understatement, and a litotes to describe today's lesson.

As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?
